In this project, the primary focus is the drive towards improved social (e.g.health), economic (e.g. worker productivity) and environmental (less energy and water use, improved indoor ecology, etc) performance. The project will also aim to reduce the cost of building services design and component selection, and importantly, to achieve the improved and more efficient building operation and maintenance. An important aspect of the project will be to examine the appropriate granularity of control spaces in buildings which are needed to improve the quality of the building indoor environment for the occupants. In the six-month timeframe for the project, the specific objectives are to: (1) scope the market, technical and user requirements for sensors and technologies that can be used to advance the sustainability cause through smart building technologies, and (2) develop a proposal for a prototype hardware and software system for smart indoor environment control.
