Research contribution to theory: |
| There is almost no work in this field. As with most PhDs this onecovers only a minute section within the greater scope. However, the research contribution is potentially enormous as it opens an entirely new area for consideration and continuation by other researchers. |
Research contribution to industry practice: |
| It is most likely to have its greatest effect in the area of marketing for environmentally sustainable design. The research focus is continually being magnified on an ever smaller area to allow for the academic rigours of PhD research. At this point the research area has been narrowed to various psychological factors (primarily marketing psychology) in relation to energy efficiency in buildings. In this area our industry has a tendency to tell people what it needs and then wonder why they dont buy it. Energy efficiency is politically currently and scientifically shown to be crucial in our society. This research has the potential short term to alter the system of marketing for those involved in environmental construction and thus increase market share, and; broaden the environmental market allowing new players to enter the arena. Medium to long term, with additional research in the field; understanding why people think the way they do in this area allows the industry to market appropriately and taking a leading position in altering the currently detrimental environmental pathway. In turn this potentially improves the overall reputation of the industry and gives the industry greater clout in its dealings with governments and in looking to foreign contracts. |
Life after Research: | Col is a self employed builder in the residential industry andalso works as a building inspector. |
