Doing business internationally This project addressed the question How do construction sector design firms internationalise and develop sustainable business models? This investigation identified the barriers and success factors which Australian-based design companies experience when working internationally, and their exposure to financial risk. Case studies explored the way in which three firms maintained their longevity in various international markets and the manner in which these firms:
- achieved long term sustainability
- dealt with problems and barriers in international markets
- developed successful strategies for being adaptable to different markets and changes within markets.
Key issues addressed were: - Clarify why firms work in international markets.
- Identify policies and map processes that firms undertake to enter international markets.
- Identify difficulties of entering various markets and successful strategies used for particular markets.
- Map project processes and identify difficulties on particular projects.
- Identify the significance of cross-cultural business communication in design management and thus the acquisition of social and cultural capital.
- Develop long-term economic performance criteria to enable the measurement of performance in selected markets (social, cultural and intellectual).
