Derek Thompson

Course of study:

Master of Design, Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University

Research Topic:

Transitional Soundspace: listening in motion

Since completing PhD/Masters:

Acoustic Consultant with Arup Acoustics, based in Melbourne. Working on a range of local and international projects, with a focus on performing arts venue design and spatial auralisation.

Research focus:

Transdisciplinary project research into dynamic experience of open architectural spaces. Included extensive field recording, analysis, and experimentation with 3D sound reproduction technology. The research applied concepts from soundscape studies, acoustics, and perceptual investigations to inform documentation, analysis, and sound-design intervention for transitional spaces.

Research impact on industry practice:

Will facilitate a greater awareness of perceptual and aesthetic considerations in designing sound environments, going beyond limitations of current acoustic measurement methodology. This research aims to advance understanding of dynamic aural experience in architecture, also relevant to the development of emerging technology for real-time and navigable audio virtual environments.
