On 14 April, Professor Robin Drogemuller and Dr Jim Steel presented a paper at the Knowledge Industry Survival Strategy Initiative workshop, part of the 20th Australian Software Engineering Conference held on the Gold Coast.
The workshop covered issues of interoperability in domain-specific languages, including those used within Architecture / Engineering / Construction ( AEC) industries. Professor Drogemuller and Dr Steel contributed expert knowledge in the area of Industry Foundation Class (IFC), the data model specification used in AEC industries.
The paper presented gave a detailed explanation of IFC - its purpose, how it is defined, and how it is used - and explained its current shortcomings and challenges going forward. Other attendees expressed interest in IFC as a challenging example of a domain specific specification in terms of its size, complexity, and the importance of interoperability in the highly collaborative domain of AEC.
The Australian Software Engineering Conference was established in 1986 asa leading technical forum for the exchange of peer-reviewed research outcomes and industry best-practice in software engineering. The conference targets a wide range of participants including software engineering researchers, practitioners and educators for across Australia, its regional neighbours, and from other international locations.
