Big audiences for FM Sydney Opera House showcase events
Stephen Ballesty (left) with Hon Bob Baldwin,at Melbourne Showcase Some 300 leading practitioners from the facilities management (FM) attended three industry events hosted by the CRC for Construction Innovation in November, which showcased the outcomes of Construction Innovations Sydney Opera House FM Exemplar project. The events showcased research outcomes in the areas of digital modelling, services procurement and performance benchmarking to develop an integrated FM solution which could be used by industry to demonstrate the role of FM as a business enabler.
Led by Stephen Ballesty of Rider Hunt, the Sydney Opera House FM Exemplaris a Construction Innovation project undertaken in collaboration with Rider Hunt, Woods Bagot, Transfield Services Australia, Sydney Opera House, Facility Management Australia, Brisbane City Council, Queensland Department of Public Works, CSIRO, Queensland University of Technology andThe University of Sydney. Facility management is one of Australia'sfastest growing and dynamic industries. Itcontributes $8.6 billion to the Australian economy and employs 135,000 people. The FM exemplar project was developed as part of the Federal Governments FM Action Agendawith support fromthe Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources. With a design life of 250 years as a performing arts centre, Sydney Opera House is acknowledged as an icon that is an architectural masterpiece and an asset of national significance. The facility comprises 7 theatres, 37 plant rooms, 12 lifts and over 1000 rooms. The facility delivers over 2500 performances every year. As one of the most unique facilities in the world, the Sydney Opera House provides a range of FM challenges and afforded a very public opportunity to research and to create innovative FM strategies and models to benefit the FM industry and the economy as a whole.
